CHAPTER HISTORY

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 13, 1913 on the campus of Howard University (Washington, DC) by 22 African-American collegiate women. In January 2023, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. celebrated its 110th anniversary. 

The Alpha Delta Sigma Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta was chartered in Dayton, Ohio on September 1, 1936. The chapter held its first May Week Program at the Dayton Art Institute in May 1937, beginning a history of local projects which are second to none. The chapter name was changed to the Dayton Alumnae Chapter in 1956. Since its chartering, the chapter has become one of the most versatile and dynamic chapters within Delta Sigma Theta, and one of the most active and engaged organizations in the Dayton community. 

The Dayton Alumnae Chapter’s Debutante Ball, held annually since 1949, is the chapter’s signature event and has given over $1,000,000 in scholarships to area high school seniors. The chapter consistently has over 75 students involved in its youth programs; supports, educates and advocates for the Artemis Center for Domestic Violence; regularly hosts Financial Fortitude workshops informing members and the community about personal finances, estate and health planning; and stands up against infant mortality.The Dayton Alumnae Chapter is  a financial sponsor and supporter of the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.


The history of the Dayton Alumnae Chapter is an impressive archive which mirrors the inherent dedication and the success of its members. More importantly, it is the legacy of the Dayton Alumnae Chapter which challenges its members to support more, to give more, and to care more than ever before. The goal of the Dayton Alumnae Chapter continues to be, to further the reach and impact of the chapter on the local area.


Dayton Alumnae Chapter Facts: 

• The first chapter president was Marie Stokes.

• The first Debutante Ball was held in 1950.

• The first Jabberwock was held on February 8, 1953.

• The first Peppermint Ball was in 1963.
