Educational Development

“If you educate a man, you educate an individual. But if you educate a woman, you educate a nation."

– African Proverb

Educational Programs

The purpose of Educational Development is to emphasize scholastic achievement and higher academic development, promote service learning, foster college preparation and planning, and continue educating the Greater Dayton Community. Dayton Alumnae features Youth Programs and Grow with Google as part of our Educational Development Programmatic Thrust.

Youth Programs

Delta Sigma Theta has three national youth enrichment programs designed to promote the development of young girls and boys. These include, but are not limited to, Delta GEMS, Delta Academy and EMBODI (collectively “youth initiatives”). Currently, Dayton Alumnae works with girls in middle and high school through the Delta Gems and Delta Academy programs.

  • Delta Academy

The Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy provides an opportunity for us to enrich and enhance the education of girls.

Our primary goal is to prepare these girls for leadership by focusing on the cultivation and maintenance of relationships, scholarship in math, science, and technology, and by providing opportunities for public service.

    Target: Girls ages 11-14.

  • Delta GEMS

The Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS (Growing & Empowering Myself Successfully) Institute is an outgrowth and continuation of the Delta Academy program. Locally, we offer monthly modules for the participants with a  focus to instill the need to excel academically, to assist in goal setting and planning for the future, and to actively involve girls in service learning and community service projects.

Target: Girls ages 14-18 (High School)

  • EMBODI

The EMBODI (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence) program utilizes monthly modules to focus our efforts on the plight of African-American boys. Locally, we have a team of adult men as mentors who help improve the social skills and life skills of young men.

Target: Boys ages 14-18 (High School)
